Maui, Haleakala National Park When we went tot the rim of the dormant volcano, we did NOT plan well. We had on shorts and short sleeve shirts. The temp was 50 at the top of the mountain with a wind exceeding 30 MPH. To say we were cold is far from the chill to the bone feeling I had. Of course to get photos I had to walk quite a ways. As I look at these now they run a tingle up my spine!
Altitude over 10,000 feet
The clouds were far below.
The crater is huge!
The wind blew so hard I had to lean against a building to get steady.
The observatory is used by scientists.
You can get a feel for the size of the crater, the walls are not truly defined.
Rare and almost extinct
Other Maui mountain tips can be seen.
One side ot the crater.
Another side
We were glad to get to our car, the heater was on full blast!
The volcano trip survivors!
A favorite serene photo
This is the setting for the most expensive lunch I have ever eaten! The bill was $170! But...Di says her lobster sandwich was well worth it! And all we had was 4 lunches, ice water to drink and one desert that we shared. Ouch!!
