When we arrived we noticed lots of construction going on. The city was not as clean as the others we visited. You will notice litter in the photos. The canals were clean but at least half of the boats moored should have been trashed. It was quite a shock after being in Copenhagen. But, we only saw such a small part of the city it wouldn't be fair to make that a judgment for the entire country. Amsterdam is is the constitutional capital of and principal city in the North Holland Province. Amsterdam is divided by canals into 90 islands joined by almost 400 bridges. Almost the entire city is on pilings driven through peat and sand to a firm substratum of clay. When we left the city for a trip to see a park and windmill the scenery changed dramatically. The homes were gorgeous, well manicured and the neighborhoods looked like a place where I would like to live. The bikes were something else! Better mind the cyclist or you would be run over! Monument on the square Have you ever seen so many bikes? St Nicholas Notice the skyline. The Renaissance facades are so interesting The boats were often small motor boats. Church of our Savior Inside our canal boat was comfortable and clean The bridge builders had to make a bundle connecting one side to another Tranquil setting They discriminate in favor of men -- outside potties are not provided for you gals! Man Dad, I can't wait until I am old enough for my own bike! Notice this house is below the level of the canal! Better hope it doesn't flood! This is one of many working windmills. Rembrandt's knee may get tired in a few more centuries! Photos from 8/16 - Bruges, Belgium
