We were surprised to find Berlin a big modern city. It has been 17 years since The Wall came tumbling down. For decades the walls stood to prevent folks leaving from East Germany. Some tried and were shot down. The Germans say it was one of the few things the army did in complete secrecy, efficiently and it was done in a matter of days. The army came in with cement, barbed wire and sealed off the entire E/W. No one but the elderly were allowed to pass through. Folks tried to leave for employment opportunities and a better life.
