Bruges is the capital of West Flanders Province. It is famous for manufacture of fine lace. We saw all sorts of fine lace items. Bruges has about 50 bridges. Many of the buildings are of the 13th century. We loved the tour here. It was mostly on foot, the cobbled streets and the medieval construction set our expectation for a special day. Unlike both Copenhagen and Amsterdam their canals were "water only" - i.e. no boats moored. It was charming to say the least. I'll let the pictures tell the story.
A typical street for shopping. Notice the facades. Each has a distinct style. Yum, Yum! 1703 precedes our nations existence! The Burg may fairly be called the Acropolis (The fortified height of an ancient Greek city) of the town. Want a ride? Romantic maybe but not at 10:00 AM! The Burg seems to tower over the town. Want a slice of pizza! 1754 and a 5 window building = major taxes! The Parliament Building Model of the Beffroi, the Eiffel Tower of Bruges. The building is so high I couldn't get a photo. Di loves the flowers - the heck with history! Carol and Dennis Jones Local artist's painting -- selling on the street corner. Di is read to take the boat ride through the canal. It was such a tranquil ride with so many photo opportunities. Steeples are an interesting The only wooden faced building in the town. Building restrictions require all to be of brick. Fires destroyed the building many times. All from lightning and kitchen fires that spread throughout the town. Now this is a setting I could retire too! |
